Q:  How do you get more followers on Instagram without buying them?

A:  This is probably my favorite question to answer out of over 200+ answers I've answered on Quora.

First, why do you want to grow your followers? That’s an important question you should know the answer to....

Second, it’s called growth hacking. I’ve built my entire company Handshakin' for personal brands that want to grow into through leaders. Our most popular service is Instagram Growth Hacking.

Here’s how we do it (not going to hard sell you on Quora). We go out and like, follow, and unfollow users based on hashtags, locations, or accounts that they follow. We look at the results each month, and tweak the settings.

Sounds simple, right? We do a few other important techniques.

We send a message to new followers that starts a conversation (aka not “thanks for the follow, immediately buy my product at www.i’mhardsellingyou.com”).

For example, for my account ‘handshakinpodcast’ on Instagram, we send “OMG The dubstep might be too hardcore in my first episode. Can I have your opinion on it?”

Each month, we look at the amount of likes, follows, unfollows of other accounts, the amount of new followers we got, the amount of messages we sent out v. received, and how many people clicked the link in our bio of each account. It’s a lot of work. But….

They’re all real accounts with real users behind them, and that’s why our least engaged client has over 600 likes on his most recent photo out of less than 700 followers. Can you say the same? Can brands that bought followers say the same?
